If you are going to write a spiritual obituary with me, here is the format I was given. A speaker at a recent conference walked through four parts, and I have found each one useful.
The first part is the name and the dying: who or what died, and when. Date each entry, because this does not happen all at once. It happens one thing at a time.
The second is the cause. Something dies because of what was done to it. It was surrendered, starved, or put under the power of the cross. Naming the cause makes it harder to bring it back. Behind every one of them is the cross, because that is where the former man is was crucified with Him.
The third is what was said of it in life. Every old habit had its own claims and its own justifications. “I had every right. That is just how I am.”
They started it. Writing down what it told you shows you exactly what you were believing.
The fourth is survived by, and it keeps the exercise from ending as a list of losses.
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:3
What survives is not a smaller me. It is Christ living in me. You do not have to share what you write with anyone, but write it down.
This is the question I am sitting with. Which entry do I write first: the one I am ready to bury, or the one I am still defending?
Make today count. See you tomorrow.
