If the old self was already crucified with Him, why did Jesus say to take up the cross daily?
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
Luke 9:23
I think the answer is in the difference between the fact and the agreement. The fact was settled once, at the cross. The agreement is made again every day.
Jesus was clear about His purpose in His own life.
For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
John 6:38
He came to do the will of the One who sent Him, not His own. That is what the daily agreement looks like lived out.
There will be times we are asked to do something we are uncomfortable with, for reasons we may not even be able to name. We may want an explanation, or a way out, or a little more time. Dying daily means we give Him a full yes before the explanation comes.
That is the difference between a dead man and a numb one. Earlier in this series I wrote that a dead man is not ruled by hurt or offense. I did not say he feels nothing. The discomfort may still be there. It just does not get a voice.
This is what I’ve been challenging myself with today. When He asks me to do something uncomfortable, will I ask for an explanation first, or surrender first?
Make today count. See you tomorrow.
