Most of us have thought about the end of our lives, even if we never say it out loud. We think about the dash between the birth year and the death year. We think about who is named in our will, the letters we might want to write, how to prepare financially, and what arrangements to make ahead of time. Some of us have even thought about our own obituary.
Morbid? Perhaps. But it is a direct reflection of who we were and what our life was about.
For a believer it carries even more weight, because it ends in front of the Father. Salvation settles that we get to stand there. It does not settle what He says when we do. Those are two separate things.
His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Matthew 25:21
Once I am there, what will He say? Will I have regrets that I could have done more, or spoken to one more person, or been a little bolder?
That is why I have started writing a spiritual obituary.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Galatians 2:20
Am I really dying to myself? What does it mean if I am really dead? A dead man does not argue. He does not hold on to anger. He is not ruled by hurt or offense.
The moment I decided to put to death every last thing that could possibly hold me back, it seemed the enemy found exactly where to set me up for a fall, and was not a small one. There was carnage, and I am not proud of it. I have more to learn and forgiveness to seek.
It is like peeling an onion. I have already come through a number of layers, and each one that comes off can bring tears. In my experience, though, the deeper I go, the freer I am.
I am writing a spiritual obituary, and I would like you to join me. The process is not always fun, but I have found it rewarding.
I have been considering the following question and invite you to consider it also. Will I stand before the Father with a list of what I meant to do, or a report of what He asked me to do?
Make today count. See you tomorrow.
