When life looks nothing like the picture we carried in our minds, the question is not only how to move on but which way we are facing when we try. Today I want us to look at one of the shortest verses Jesus ever spoke, because it carries more weight than its length suggests.
Remember Lot’s wife.
Luke 17:32
Genesis tells us she looked back as they fled and became a pillar of salt. Scripture does not tell us what was in her heart, but the verse just before this one in Luke speaks of the one who would turn back for what he left behind in his house, and it is hard not to see a heart that had never fully let go of what it was leaving. Her feet were leaving the city while her attention was still living there.
Looking back and remembering are not the same thing. We can remember what God has done with gratitude and awe, but longing for what was, or replaying what should have been, is a turn of the heart that takes us out of the very place God is leading. Regret, shame, and guilt all live in the past, and that is exactly where the enemy wants us to stay, because a person facing backward cannot hear what is being said ahead.
One word of caution, though, because conviction and condemnation are not the same voice. Conviction is the Holy Spirit pointing at something so that we can bring it to Jesus and be free of it. Condemnation only accuses and offers no way out, and the Word is clear about who it no longer has a claim on.
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Romans 8:1
So how do we reset when things have not gone the way we expected? We do not recover the old plan or repair every circumstance first. We turn, because He is forward.
And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.
Deuteronomy 31:8
He is not waiting behind us to see whether we can undo what is done. He is already ahead of us, and the only thing asked of us is the next faithful step toward Him, which is available to anyone, at any age, starting from exactly where they stand today.
Make today count. See you tomorrow.
