An object can get heavy. Not in your hands, but in your heart.
In the last few years I have let go of things I treasured. Some were worth a lot of money, and all of them were worth even more in memory. It was never only about the price. It was about what they meant.
What I have learned is that holding something loosely is not the same as not caring about it. You can enjoy a thing, even want it, and still refuse to let it carry that much weight. The weight comes from our grip, and we are the ones who choose to loosen it.
The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
Psalm 24:1
Everything we hold was His first. That changes what it means to open a hand. I am not giving up what is mine. I am passing along, or handing back, what I was only ever managing.
Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
1 Corinthians 4:2
A steward does not own the house. He looks after it for the one who does, and what is asked of him is faithfulness, not possession.
Jesus said the same thing clearly.
And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Luke 12:15
Gifts, heirlooms, and the things we receive are good. They are not what makes a life, and they are never worth more than the people standing next to us. I never want an object to be heavy enough to divide a relationship, ever.
I have been considering the following question and invite you to consider it also. Am I holding what I have as a steward, or gripping it as an owner?
Make today count. See you tomorrow.
