One of the speakers at a conference I recently attended said, “You can know and quote the entire Bible, but if you don’t have love, you have nothing.” Those words echo this verse:
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:2 NKJV
Yesterday, we saw Philip go. Today, the question is: What moves us to go? Jesus shows us through the way He lived.
And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
Matthew 14:14
Jesus saw the people, felt compassion, and responded. His actions weren’t about keeping a schedule or proving something. He was moved by the people in front of Him, and that’s what should move us, too.
Jesus told a story that makes this clear. A man was robbed and left half dead on the road. A priest and a Levite saw him, but passed by. Then a Samaritan came along:
But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine. Then he set him on his own donkey and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
Luke 10:33–34 MEV
The Samaritan’s compassion didn’t stop at feeling sorry for the man. He went to him, tended to his wounds, and made sure he was cared for. As one speaker at the conference put it, compassion moves us to action. The Samaritan shows us what that can look like.
Power without love may get a task done, but it can miss the person who needs care. And love that never moves beyond a feeling leaves help undone. Jesus brought compassion and action together.
So here’s a question I’ve been sitting with: When I go, am I moved by compassion for the person in front of me, or by the need to be seen doing something?
Make today count. See you tomorrow.
