Yesterday we saw that what we receive is meant to go out. Today we begin with what goes out with us, and that is a Name.
The day after Peter and John saw a man who had been lame from birth walk, they were brought before the rulers, elders, and scribes. The question put to them was straightforward.
And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?
Acts 4:7
Peter did not have a title the rulers respected nor credentials they recognized. He did not point to himself, to John, or to anything he had done to earn it. He gave them a Person.
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Acts 4:10
Notice how much is in that answer. It is the name of Jesus Christ, of Nazareth, whom they crucified and whom God raised. The Name works because of who He is and what He did, and for no other reason. It is never a word that carries power by itself.
That is also why it was given to us to go in. Jesus told His followers this before He ascended.
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Mark 16:17
In my name. They were not sent to use His name as a phrase at the end of a prayer. They were sent as people who belonged to Him, carrying what belongs to Him, to the people He sent them to.
Over the next days we will keep coming back to this. A name carries the weight of the One it belongs to, and we go in His name.
I challenge all of us to ask ourselves this question. When I use the Name of Jesus, am I going as someone sent by Him, or am I only using it as a phrase to close with?
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
