There is a kind of religion that looks flawless from the outside but holds no intrinsic meaning or value. Paul cautioned us about this.
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2 Timothy 3:5
Form without power. That phrase describes something that has all the right look, the right words, the right postures, and none of the actual life that shape was meant to be. It is possible to look completely godly and be spiritually empty at the very same time, and Paul’s instruction is not to admire that kind of religion. It is to turn away from it entirely.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
Matthew 23:25-28
Whited sepulchers (a person who looks good and pure on the outside, but is actually evil or corrupt on the inside.) Tombs painted white so they looked clean and honorable from the road, while the inside held exactly what a tomb holds. Jesus was not describing people who failed at religion. He was describing people who had perfected the outward form of it while the inside stayed completely dead. That is a sobering picture, because it means religious performance can actually get better and better while the heart underneath gets worse and worse, with nobody noticing from the outside, sometimes not even the person themselves.
This is what makes traditions of men so dangerous. They are excellent at producing their appearance and the way they appear. They can train a person to look right, sound right, follow every visible expectation, and still leave the inside completely untouched. That is not discipleship and structure was never the problem Jesus confronted. Structure without real life was.
I think about how easy it is to mistake activity for power, attendance for transformation, correct language for a real relationship. None of those things are wrong in themselves, but none of them are proof of a true relationship with God either. The whited tomb looked better than most of the honest, ordinary graves around it, and that was exactly the danger.
Is what you are doing evidence of real power at work in you, or is it a well maintained form with nothing alive underneath?
