An anchor does something else besides holding you steady in rough water. It keeps you from drifting somewhere you never intended to go.
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.
Ephesians 4:14
Tossed to and fro, carried about. That is not just a picture of unstable circumstances, it is a picture of an unstable mind, one that gets pulled in whatever direction the loudest voice or the newest opinion happens to blow. Instability on the outside does not have to create instability on the inside, but it will, every time, if there is nothing anchoring the mind itself.
I notice this most in seasons like the one I am in right now. New city, new routines, new voices, new information constantly coming at me about where to go, what to buy, how to set things up, and who to trust. It would be easy to let every new piece of input rock me a little further off center. That is exactly what an anchor exists to prevent.
Being rocked externally does not have to mean being rocked internally. The waves outside a boat can be enormous, and the boat can still hold its position, because what holds it does not live on the surface where the waves are. It lives beneath, fixed to something the storm cannot reach.
This is why grounding yourself daily in what is actually true matters so much, especially when everything around you is in motion. Every wind of doctrine, every new opinion, every uncertain circumstance will keep coming. The question is not whether the wind will blow, because it will. The question is whether you are anchored deep enough that being tossed on the surface never becomes being carried away entirely.
What winds have been blowing through your life lately, and are you anchored deep enough to stay fixed while they pass?
If you have never given your life to Jesus Christ, you can do that right now. Pray this with me:
Dear Heavenly Father,
I confess that I have sinned, and I believe Jesus died for my sins and rose again on the third day. I ask Jesus, come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. Thank You for saving me.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
