~Waiting for the Trumpet~

I am writing this on September 11, ahead of tonight, even though it’s scheduled to post early tomorrow morning.

Tonight I get to experience something I have never experienced before, a true Rosh Hashanah service, at a Messianic congregation that recognizes Jesus as the promised Messiah. I am coming at this from that perspective, aware there will be differences from a traditional synagogue, but eager to learn every bit of it.

Biblically, this day is called Yom Teruah, the Day of the Blowing of the Shofar, also known as the Feast of Trumpets. It marks the Jewish New Year and is treated as a Sabbath, a day set apart. I understand the shofar will sound tonight, the ram’s horn, the same sound that called Israel to attention at Mount Sinai. In a Messianic setting, that trumpet call carries even more weight, a reminder of the promise that Jesus will return, and that no one knows the day or the hour, but we are told to know the season.

Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance. Psalm 89:15

I have read that there will be a meal tonight too, a round challah dipped in honey, apple slices dipped in honey, simple traditions carrying a shared hope, that the coming year will be sweet.

I do not know exactly what I will feel when that shofar sounds for the first time in front of me. I do not know what it will stir up. But I am walking in expecting to encounter something real, and I will tell you Sunday what I actually experienced.

If you have never given your life to Jesus Christ, you can do that right now. Pray this with me:

Dear Heavenly Father,

I confess that I have sinned, and I believe Jesus died for my sins and rose again on the third day. I ask Jesus, come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. Thank You for saving me.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Make today count and see you tomorrow.
