What good is it, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. James 2:14-17
When you command something in faith, you expect it to happen, not because of your own ability, but because of Him. You pray with confidence, knowing it’s already done, already finished. That’s real faith, faith that moves.
But there are ways faith stops moving, even when it looks active on the surface.
One, is faith that simply never acts. Belief that stays in your head or on your lips but never produces anything. That’s the picture James paints, saying the right words to someone in need while doing nothing to actually meet it.
The other is more subtle. Being busy for Him isn’t the same as being led by Him. Staying occupied with good, godly-looking activity can actually keep us out of trouble, too busy to put our eyes, ears, or mouth on something we shouldn’t. But doing good things isn’t automatically the same as doing what He specifically called us to do. We’re meant to keep our eyes on Him and His plan, doing what He calls us to even when it’s challenging, because ultimately it’s not us doing the work. It’s Him in us, working through us for His good pleasure. That’s why His yoke is easy and His burden is light. When we’re doing what we’re actually supposed to be doing, we won’t even notice how hard it is, because it’s His strength carrying it, not ours.
The final is the most sobering. Miracle signs and wonders are meant to be a work of the Spirit. But they can be counterfeited, produced through words and intention with an almost mechanical predictability, technique standing in for relationship. When that happens, it becomes a work of the flesh instead of the Spirit, and it will wear you out, because you’re the one generating it instead of Him working through you.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7:22-23
That is the most sobering thought I can imagine. Real results, real works, but no relationship behind them. That’s the ultimate version of faith that doesn’t move, faith that never actually moved toward Him at all, even while producing something that looked like fruit.
So faith that moves isn’t just about believing hard enough to see something happen. That belief rooted in relationship, obedience to what He specifically called you to, and power that flows from Him working through you rather than technique you’ve mastered on your own.
