Knowing Him Daily

When we talk about a fair-weather friend, we usually mean someone who shows up when it’s easy and disappears the moment it costs them anything. But before we can rightly evaluate anyone else’s friendship, we have to ask a harder question first. Are we a friend of Jesus? And are we a friend to ourselves?

Most people, sadly, are a fair-weather friend to God. Present when it’s convenient. Absent when it costs something. That’s the exact pattern they’d criticize in someone else, yet it’s often the pattern of their own walk with Him.

Here’s what’s even more important. If we have not lived a consecrated life to Him, we cannot actually be a true friend to ourselves, because what looks like self-care or self-focus is only driven by selfishness. The world is really big into self-care, self-help, self-everything. Jesus is all about Him, and when we live that out, dying to ourselves becomes easy, not hard, because we’re crucified with Him.

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me. Galatians 2:20

A dead man doesn’t care what someone else thinks. A dead man doesn’t have feelings that get wounded by other people’s inconsistency. A dead man doesn’t get sick with worry over whether someone will show up.

Being a friend to yourself, the way that actually matters, is learning how much Jesus loves you. It’s becoming so consumed with Him, so filled with awe of who He is, that you reach a level of seriousness completely consecrated to Him in spirit, soul, and body.

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless. 1 Thessalonians 5:23

That’s not fragmented devotion, rather whole consecration.

I don’t always know exactly what’s next. But I know this: when I’m so filled with all of Him that I follow Him regardless of what I can see, I know God is worth following. I’ve seen Him work in me and through me. I don’t know how the impact of my life will demonstrate His kingdom in and through me, but it will. It will bring salt and life, influencing every city I go into with His kingdom, with miracle signs and wonders.

That’s what consecration produces. Not a fair-weather version of faith that shows up when it’s easy, but a whole, undivided life given completely to Him. Once you’re that kind of friend to Jesus, once you’re that kind of friend to yourself, you stop needing other people’s consistency to remain stable. You’re already secure in the One who never leaves and never forsakes.
