Knowing Him Daily

The Greek word translated double-minded is dipsychos, literally two-souled, and it means something far deeper than having two opinions. It describes a person who is torn in two directions at once, trying to serve two “masters”, trying to stay loyal to God while still holding onto something else at the same time.

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
James 1:6

We’ve talked about this in the last series without naming it directly. When you profess Jesus but never actually possess Him, that’s two-souled. When you say you trust Him but keep one foot planted in your own control, that’s two-souled. When you declare healing with your mouth but confess doubt (did that really work?) the moment you’re alone, that’s two-souled.

For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. James 1:7-8

James makes it plain that this kind of person is unstable in everything, not just in one particular area but across the whole of their life, because a house divided cannot stand, and a soul divided cannot walk in faith with any real footing.

This is why we talked about drawing a hard line in the sand, and why we talked about there being no reset button, no going back and forth. A double-minded person is like a wave, driven by whatever wind blows hardest that day, fully committed one moment and pulled somewhere else entirely the next, never settled, never stable, never able to receive what they’re asking for because they don’t actually believe it with their whole soul.

Real faith requires a whole soul, not a divided one, and that means you have to stop straddling the fence between what the world offers and what God has already given you.
