Knowing Him Daily

For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

Yesterday was about what the curse cost. Today we look at the trade that ended it, and why He was the only one who could make it.

Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. Galatians‬ ‭3‬:‭13‬ ‭

That’s not a metaphor and it’s not poetic language meant to soften a hard truth. He didn’t just absorb the penalty the way someone might quietly cover a debt without anyone noticing what it cost them. He became the thing itself, not punished for sin, but made to be sin. Something happened to Him that had never touched Him before, so that something could move in the other direction away from you.

This could only work because He was fully man. He didn’t arrive already finished, He grew up the way you did, however He was a boy who at twelve already knew He was about His Father’s business, who carried the weight of that calling long before He carried the cross. He lived without knowing the hour of His own death, the same uncertainty every person carries, because only the Father knew that timing. He wasn’t handed a script. He walked it by faith, one day at a time, the same way you and I do.

Because His whole life, start to finish, was lived without one single sin He committed, He became the only one qualified to take on all of it, not just the sin in front of Him in that moment, but every sin that had ever been committed and every sin that ever would be. Past, present, future, all of it landing on one sinless man at once. “He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.”

‭‭1 John‬ ‭2‬:‭2‬ ‭That’s not a small transaction. That’s the only man in history who could have absorbed the sin of every person who ever lived, because He was the only one who owed nothing of His own.

The cost of that shows up even in how He looked. His appearance was marred and unrecognizable, His form beyond appearance of any human being. That wasn’t only the brutality of the cross. That was what it looked like for something utterly foreign to His nature to be laid on a man who had never once touched it.

Tomorrow we’ll look at what this reached beyond your standing before God, because the exchange touched your body too. For today, consider this: He lived a full human life to qualify for this trade, and then He chose and made it complete.
