“Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.
Ephesians 4:11-12
This passage gets misread constantly, as though it hands the actual work of reaching people over to a select few, apostles, evangelists, pastors, while everyone else simply sits and receives. But look again at what it actually says. Those roles exist to equip God’s people for the work of the ministry. Meaning their job is to equip the rest of us, not replace us. The work of the ministry still belongs to the saints.
“And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.”Mark 16:15 This was spoken directly to the disciples, but it did not stay contained to eleven men in one room two thousand years ago. It became the marching order handed down to every single person who would ever come to believe after them, which includes you, right now, reading this.
“And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”” Acts 1:8 Not ye shall be preachers. Witnesses. That is a far lower bar than most people assume qualifies them, and a far wider net than most people ever step into. A witness does not need a seminary degree or a title or even years of training. A witness simply tells what they have seen, what they know to be true, what has happened in their own life. If you have an experience with Jesus, you already qualify.
“But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9 Royal priests. Every believer, not a professional class set apart above the rest. This was never meant to describe pastors and missionaries only, it describes you.
“For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?”Romans 10:13-14 Someone has to be that preacher, that voice, that link in the chain, or the chain breaks and someone who could have called on His name never gets the chance to hear it at all. That someone was never meant to be only ordained clergy. It was always meant to be whoever is willing.
We are all called. Not some of us, not the especially gifted or especially trained among us, all of us. The only question left is whether we will answer.
