Work was God’s idea before it was anyone else’s, and He established it before the fall, before the curse, before anything went wrong, which means work itself is not the problem and never was: “And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.” Genesis 2:15 To dress it and to keep it, purpose, responsibility, and stewardship given by God Himself before sin ever entered the picture.

But somewhere between the garden and the modern world, work stopped being something we do and became something we are, and that is where it gets complicated, because your job title, your income, your position, your productivity, and your professional reputation were never meant to answer the question of who you are, because that question already has an answer and it has nothing to do with what you do between eight and five.

Paul provides us the right attitude toward work: “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”Colossians 3:23-24 As to the Lord. Not for the title, not for the applause, not for the identity it provides, but as an act of service to Him, which means the work matters and the way you do it matters, but it is never the source of who you are.

Solomon tested everything the world said would satisfy, work, achievement, building, accumulating, and landed here: “There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.”Ecclesiastes 2:24 From the hand of God. The work is His gift, the enjoyment of it is His gift, and the meaning behind it flows from Him, not from the work itself.

And if your identity has never been threatened by your job specifically, do not let that let you off the hook entirely, because the inventory question is the same no matter what took the seat, a relationship, a role, a season, a failure, a label someone put on you that you never should have accepted, and it always comes back to the same answer, which is that who you are has to be rooted in Him and nothing else, because everything else will eventually shift and He never will.

Can I live without it? The question is not whether you can live without your job, it is whether you have allowed your job to become something only Hewas meant to be.
