Today we pause to honor the men and women who have fought and continue to fight for the freedom we enjoy in this country, past, present, and future, and their sacrifice is not forgotten and we are grateful, and may God bless each of them and may God bless the United States of America.

On a day or any day we gather with the people we love most, it is the perfect moment to talk about where family actually belongs in the order of our hearts, because the answer matters more than most of us have been told.

Family is a gift, one of the greatest gifts God gives us, and the Bible is full of clear instruction about our responsibility as children, as spouses, as parents, and as grandparents, not to mention our responsibility toward each of those people in our lives, because He takes those relationships seriously and so should we, but none of them, not one, was ever meant to occupy the place that belongs only to Him.

Jesus said something that made people uncomfortable then and still does now: “He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Matthew 10:37 More than me. That is the line He draws, not because family does not matter but because when family takes first place it becomes something it was never designed to be, and both the relationship and the person suffer under that weight.

Luke expresses this: “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:26 The word translated hate here is the Greek miseō, which by extension means to love less by comparison, and the comparison is always Him first.

And yet Joshua stood before his entire household and made this declaration: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 Me and my house. He said this as the head of the home, together, but under Him. This is the right order, which is the only order that actually works.

Family is not God. When God is first, family gets the best version of you that exists, because you are drawing from a source that does not run dry.

Can I live without it? The question is not whether you can live without family, it is whether your family can survive you putting them where only He belongs.
