Knowing Him Daily

There is a challenge circulating that I want to throw at you before we go any further, and it is this: write the numbers one through thirty one on separate pieces of paper, draw one each day for the month of July, and get rid of that many items from your home that day, and by the end of the month you will have released over five hundred things that were taking up space you may not have even realized they were occupying.

Now let me ask you something deeper than decluttering: what if some of what is sitting in your home has a spiritual connection you have never considered, because things carry history, and some of what we own came from places, people, or cultures that served something other than our God, and if that is the case it is worth asking the Holy Spirit directly what is beneficial and what is holding you back, because everything affects everything and everything is spiritual even when it does not look like it.

Jesus was direct about where our treasures belong: “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where no thieves break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also, which means your stuff is never just stuff, it is a map to what you actually value.

Paul puts it plainly: “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:2 Not because things are inherently evil but because affection is a limited resource and whatever holds it is holding something that belongs to Him.

And John draws the line clearly: “Love not the world, neither the things that are the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” 1 John 2:15-16 Not in him. That is not a gentle caution, it is a direct warning about divided affection.

Now let me take this somewhere that might surprise you, your thoughts. Nobody knows what you are thinking until you open your mouth, but God already does, and your thought life is as much a part of this inventory as what is sitting on your shelves, because private is not actually private and everything is connected and everything is spiritual.

Ask the Holy Spirit what needs to go. Then be willing to let it.

Can I live without it? That is exactly the right question.
