Worship does something before anything else does, and that is not a poetic idea, it is a documented pattern in scripture, because every time someone chose to worship before the breakthrough came, the atmosphere shifted first and the miracle followed.
Paul and Silas did not wait until they were free to worship, they worshipped until they were free. The result was immediate: “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.” Acts 16:25-26 Midnight. Chains on. Singing anyway. That is what anointed worship does, it does not wait for the circumstances to improve before it lifts its voice.
Jehoshaphat understood this when he sent the worshippers out ahead of the army: “And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the Lord; for his mercy endureth for ever. And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir.” 2 Chronicles 20:21-22 When they began to sing, not after the victory, but before it.
God inhabits the praises of His people Psalm 22:3, which means worship is not a warmup to the real thing, it is the thing itself, the place where He takes up residence and everything else is subject to that presence.
Not all worship carries that weight equally, and it is not about the style or the era of the song but about whether the heart behind it is surrendered or just singing words, because tradition without anointing is noise and anointing without tradition can still shake a prison at midnight.
Worship is built out of relationship and intimacy, and without that foundation it is just a song, which is why knowing Him, and knowing Him means knowing His word, is so vitally important, because that kind of knowing shows, it is visible on your countenance, it is in your eyes, it is obvious and noticeable and it carries a weight that cannot be manufactured.
Do not let the enemy intimidate you out of what belongs to you, do not let that little imp talk you out of your place, bully you into silence, or convince you that what you carry in your relationship with Jesus is anything less than the most powerful thing on the face of the earth. It is, and he knows it, which is exactly why he works so hard to keep you out of your quiet time.
It is time for the body of Christ in these last days to rise up and be who God called us to be as men and women of God. It starts in the quiet, before your day begins, before the enemy has a chance to set the agenda. I am talking to myself as much as I am talking to you. Rise up, take your place, and let us run the last leg of this race like we intend to win it.
Can I live without it? Not if I want the doors to open.
Until God is enough, nothing else will be enough.
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
