There is a story Jesus never corrected Martha for, He corrected her for being distracted by it, which is a completely different thing, because the serving was not wrong, the frantic unanchored version of it was.
“And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42 One thing. Not no things. Not stop serving. One thing first, and everything else finds its proper place after.
I will be transparent with you, I did not sit before I ran yesterday, and by 11:30 at night I came home from serving for church to find that a water filtration pitcher I had left filling on the counter had overflowed through my kitchen, laundry room, living room and one guest room while I was gone, and I was shop vacuuming until 2 AM. I normally fill it in the sink, but because I had just finished the dishes and I was in a hurry I set it on the counter instead and walked out the door. This was not God, this was me moving too fast, and when we move too fast we miss things, sometimes small things and sometimes things that cost us a 2 AM shop vac session and a call to Servpro with significant consequences.
He is a good God and a good Daddy, and He was not waiting to teach me a lesson, He was simply available that morning if I had slowed down long enough to listen.
By putting Him first we are prioritizing a relationship with Him above everything else, and His favor surrounds us like a shield, which is exactly why we should not skip the one thing that anchors the whole day.
David said: “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.” Psalm 27:4 One thing. Sought first. Before the dishes, before the ministry run, before the day has a chance to become a flood.
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 Wait first. Run after. In that order.
Sit before you run. Every single day.
Can I live without it? Yesterday answered that question for me.
Until God is enough, nothing else will be enough.
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
