I have loved John chapter one for years. There is something about the way it opens that causes me to pause, and I want to slow down and take it apart with you today because I think many rush past it too quickly and miss the significance of what is actually being said.
In the beginning was the Word. Not in the beginning the Word appeared. Not in the beginning the Word was created. Was. Already there. Before time, before creation, before anything existed that we can see or touch or name, He was. That is not a small statement. That is the foundation of everything.
And the Word was with God. Distinct from God, present with God, in relationship with God before the first moment of time ever ticked. And then John says it simply, and the Word was God. Not a god. Not a lesser being. Not an angel or a prophet or a good teacher, He was God.
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. Every mountain, every ocean, every cell in your body, every star in a galaxy you will never see. Made through the Word. And then John 1:14 says it in a way that should settle it every single time you read it. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The same Word that spoke light into the darkness of a formless void took on skin, walked into the chaos of human history, and lived among us.
That is who you are reading when you open your Bible, not a book of suggestions, not a collection of ancient wisdom, but the living Word of the living God who was there before time began and who became flesh so that you could know Him personally.
Deuteronomy 8:3 says that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Your physical body requires food to survive, and that is not optional. Your spirit requires the Word in exactly the same way, not as a religious habit, not as a morning routine, but as survival.
Here is what I would like you to consider. There is no other God. Isaiah 45:5 says it without question, I am the Lord and there is no other, there is no God besides Me. One God. One Word. One source of truth and power and life. Until that is not just mentally agreed with but you are convinced in the deepest part of you, the trust fall we talked about cannot fully happen. Because if there is even a crack of maybe there is another way, another source, another option, you cannot fall backward with your whole weight. You cannot align your believing into doing when your foundation is still shifting.
He is the Word, He is the only God, and He became flesh so you could know Him. Open His Book, and let it become the foundation of your everything.
If you have never made the choice to give your life to the One who was the Word before time began, today is the day. Pray this with me:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for sending Jesus to die on the Cross just for me. I admit that I have sinned, and I repent. I ask You to forgive me. I believe that He died and rose again. Right now, I make Him the Lord of my life. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. My sins are washed away, my past is forgiven, and my future is bright. Help me to live like the beloved that I already am in Christ. Thank you for saving me.
In Jesus name,
Amen
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
