There’s an intimacy in being called by name. Not “hey you” or “there! You!” in the crowd. But by your name. The sound of it spoken with intention and especially affection changes everything about how you receive what comes next.
Isaiah captures this intimacy when God says, “I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.” Isaiah 43:1 Not “I’ve assigned you a number” or “You’re one of millions.” He’s called you by your name, and in calling you by name, He’s claimed you as His own. Your name carries weight in heaven. Your name is known and you matter.
Jesus said: “The sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.” John 10:3 A shepherd knows his sheep by name. He doesn’t treat them as a flock. He knows them individually, calls them individually, leads them individually. And Jesus is describing Himself as that shepherd, which means He knows your name. He calls you by name and He’s not managing a faceless flock. He’s tending you specifically.
The prophet Isaiah also declared that God has “graven thee upon the palms of my hands.” Isaiah 49:16 Your name is engraved on the very hands that hung on the cross for you. Not as an obligation or a duty, but as a mark of belonging, a permanent inscription that says you are His beloved and He hasn’t forgotten you. Not for a season or until you mess up too badly, but permanently.
There’s something profound about moving through your day knowing that your name is spoken in heaven, that you’re not a stranger to God, that He hasn’t forgotten who you are in the noise and chaos of the world. He knows your name and He’s called you by name. In doing so, He’s told you that you belong to Him and you always will.
Think about and meditate on what it means to be called by name by the God who created you, who knows every detail of your story, who sees you completely and still chooses to call you His own. Say your name aloud: _______, Jesus’ beloved. Let it land as the truth that the Father recognizes you, knows you, and He loves you.
If you’ve never invited Jesus into your heart, today is the day. Pray this:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for sending Jesus to die on the Cross just for me. I admit that I have sinned, and I repent. I ask You to forgive me. I believe that He died and rose again. Right now, I make Him the Lord of my life. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. My sins are washed away, my past is forgiven, and my future is bright. Help me to live like the beloved that I already am in Christ. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
