The gospel isn’t about becoming lovable and then getting loved. It’s about being loved while you’re still a mess, while you’re still figuring it out, while you’re still walking through the consequences of your own choices and the wounds of others.
Paul writes with radical clarity: “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 Not after we cleaned up, once we got serious about change, nor when we finally had ourselves together. While we were sinners, while we were broken, while we were far from Him was when He sent His Son, and His love showed up most powerfully.
The father in Luke’s parable didn’t wait for his prodigal son to shower off the pig slop and rehearse his apology speech before running out to meet him. “But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.” Luke 15:20 The father was watching and was waiting. The father loved him in the middle of the mess, not as a reward for getting clean first. That’s the heart of God toward you.
And Ephesians tells us that even “when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, by grace ye are saved” Ephesians 2:4-5 We were dead in our sins and spiritually bankrupt, we were completely unable to save ourselves. And still, God’s mercy showed up. Still, His love reached down and said yes to us when every logical measure said no. His love doesn’t wait for you to earn it or deserve it or finally get your life right. It comes while you’re still drowning, still confused, still making a mess of things.
Think about and meditate on this: the God of the universe loved you not because of who you are or what you’ve done, but because of who He is. His love isn’t transactional. It’s not dependent on your performance or your perfection. It’s dependent on nothing but His own character and His choice to pursue you.
If you’ve never invited Jesus into your heart, today is the day. Pray this:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for sending Jesus to die on the Cross just for me. I admit that I have sinned, and I repent. I ask You to forgive me. I believe that He died and rose again. Right now, I make Him the Lord of my life. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. My sins are washed away, my past is forgiven, and my future is bright. Help me to live like the beloved that I already am in Christ. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
