~Slow Fade~

LIVE LONG AND PROSPER

Have you found honey? Eat only as much as you need, lest you be filled with it and vomit. Proverbs 25:16

Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. Proverbs 4:20-22

In the 1930s and 40s a physician named Dr. Francis Pottenger Jr. conducted a study in Pasadena, California that nobody who has ever read it has been able to forget. He was feeding two groups of cats, one group on raw meat and raw milk, the other on cooked meat and pasteurized milk, and what he observed across generations was quite astonishing. The cats on the raw unprocessed diet thrived, good bone structure, healthy coats, normal behavior, successful reproduction. The cats on the processed diet began to deteriorate, and not just individually. Each successive generation was born weaker, with more skeletal deformities, smaller organ development, reproductive problems, and increasingly abnormal behavior. By the third generation some could not reproduce at all. Here is the part that may cause you to take time to think about this. It took just as many generations to restore their health as it had taken to become so unhealthy to begin with.

We are living that same trajectory.

Most of us did not choose the Standard American Diet knowingly. We inherited it, were handed it before we were old enough to ask questions, and ate what everyone around us was eating without a second thought. The damage is not obvious initially. The associated issues happen often unnoticed, the way water erodes stone, imperceptibly until one day something gives way. Like the frog in the pot who never notices the temperature rising until it is too late, we lived for years not realizing what was slowly shifting beneath the surface.

Sugar is one of the biggest offenders yet very much silent in that story. It tastes good, it is woven into nearly every processed food on the market, and research has shown it to be highly addictive by design. Beyond the weight gain and the energy crashes, chronic sugar consumption wages a slow war on the immune system, driving inflammation, feeding harmful gut bacteria, suppressing the white blood cells that fight infection, and creating the kind of internal environment where disease finds it easy to take hold. The damage is not dramatic. It is a slow fade, and that is exactly what makes it so effective.

Here is the grace in all of this. We are not starting from zero. We are not our grandparents generation and we are not the third generation cat. Every good choice we make today is a deposit into a body that is remarkably designed to heal when given the chance. We did not get here overnight and we will not turn it around overnight, but we serve a God who redeems, restores, and makes all things new, and that promise is as true for our bodies as it is for anything else in our lives.

Start somewhere.and start today.

Make today count and see you tomorrow.
