An All-Inclusive Departure From “Normal”
This is too weighty to be contained in a single day, so what follows is the first of two possibly three. Before we talk about what Jesus sent us to do, we have to look at Who sent us, how He did it. The heart of it must come from choosing Him as Lord and loving Him, because the work without the heart is not what He commissioned.
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. John 20:21
Notice that He opens with peace, shalom, nothing missing and nothing broken, and that is the place He is sending us from. Then notice the comparison. It is not “I send you to do something similar,” but as the Father sent me. What that looked like for Him is what it is to look like for us.
Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. John 5:19
Jesus did what the Father showed Him and said what the Father gave Him to say, and He did it from that place of nothing missing and nothing broken, which is why He could give without asking and reach people that no one else wanted to reach. There was no method for each circumstance and no formula to apply. He was led by the Holy Spirit, one situation at a time.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. John 14:12
That commission did not change when it passed to us. We are meant to do what He did, and even greater, but it only works the way He modeled, led by the Spirit and coming from a heart of love and compassion.
Which is why the clearest pictures of that heart are the two times it looked completely different. When Jesus overturned the tables in the temple, it was not because of hatred for the people standing there.
And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise. John 2:16
It was the motive behind the whole system, which had become greed and control standing between people and the Father. His anger was aimed at the source which is outlined in John 10:10: “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.”
Then look at the woman caught in the act of adultery. The men who dragged her in were led by the Law, without love, and it shows. The Law they claimed to be defending named both parties, yet only she was brought, because they were not looking for justice. They were setting a trap. Jesus, led by the Spirit, turned their own question back on them and then spoke to her with the words of love.
Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. John 8:11
He had compassion for her and still called sin what it was. That is the whole heart in one sentence. We are not under the Old Covenant, which those leaders knew only as letter. It now comes to us filtered through the New Covenant, with the Holy Spirit within us and love as the fulfillment of it.
For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8
This is why we can hate sin and sickness and everything the enemy uses to destroy people, and never hate a person. A person remains responsible for their own words, choices, and actions, and some have yielded to something for so long that they no longer see it as a choice at all. We stand against what is destroying them, and we love them the way He did.
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
John 13:34-35
Not love in the abstract, but as I have loved you, which means the way He loved in the temple, with the woman, and with every person He met. Tomorrow we look at the two things He sent us to do.
I challenge all of us to ask ourselves this question. When I look at someone who is struggling, can I hate what is destroying them and still love them the way He did?
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
