There is a difference between coming to God with a list and actually coming to God, and it is a difference worth examining.
Honest prayer is welcome. He is not fragile and He is not put off by raw emotion or real need. But before the requests, before the journal opens and the pen hits the paper, lead with worship. Praise Him for who He is before you ask Him for anything. If you are someone who worships with your whole body, then dance before Him in the quiet of your own living room. David did it and he was called a man after God’s own heart. This does not have to be a public display, it is simply what you do because you love Him.
When you do come with your journal and pen in hand, come with expectation. That posture, pen ready, heart open, says something. It says I am not just here to talk, I am here to listen. I am ready to receive. Readiness is a key that unlocks something in the relationship, direction, clarity, strength, peace, healing, and so much more.
Here is something worth pondering about needs and requests. Jesus said in Matthew 6:26, Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? The sparrow never asks and yet the Father provides. How much more will He take care of you. He already knows your needs before you voice them, Matthew 6:8. So while He absolutely wants to hear your heart, your needs are already covered, your requests are the desires of your heart, and your wants are the overflow of a life lived close to Him. Let that reorder your priorities when you come to Him.
What He is really after is you, not your prayer list, not your performance, just you. He wants to know you and to be known by you, and that word known carries more weight than most of us realize. The Greek word ginosko speaks of an intimate, relational knowing, the same depth of knowing referenced between a husband and a wife, not casual acquaintance, but closeness cultivated over time. It is closeness cultivated over time. Jesus used that same word in one of the most sobering statements in all of Scripture when He said depart from Me, I never knew you, Matthew 7:23. He was not saying He was unaware of their existence. He was saying there was no intimacy, no real relationship, no ginosko between them. That is the stakes of this conversation.
So today, take your journal, take your pen, and assume whatever posture feels right to you. Start with worship. Pour out your heart, Psalm 62:8. And when you do not have the words, rest in the truth of Romans 8:26, that the Spirit Himself intercedes for you. Write down what He says. Write down who you prayed for. Start with five minutes if that is where you are, and let the time grow as you do.
He is not just waiting for your requests. He is waiting for you.
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
