A friend of mine was given a bread machine a while back. She unboxed it, set it in the cupboard, and never touched it again.. And as it turned out, she didn’t have the instruction manual and she didn’t the paddle insert. That paddle was the piece that actually does the mixing and it was missing. Without it the machine could not do what it was designed to do. It just sat there, mostly complete, capable of something wonderful, but missing the one thing that made it work.
She recently asked me to figure it out. I found the missing pieces online, got everything together, and made the first loaf. I sent her photos along the way and told her the house smelled heavenly. She wrote back, “Beautiful. It started as a blob of dough and turned into something yummy. What a spiritual insight.”
I told her it was also a pretty good picture of a gift given that was never put to use. She said, “Truth.”
That bread machine is sitting in a lot of homes right now. The gift of covenant authority, given by God, fully capable of doing exactly what He designed it to do. But the paddle, the Word of God actively working inside it, has been missing. And without the Word mixing, moving, activating everything, nothing rises. Nothing becomes what it was meant to be.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says, “These words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children.” The Word was always meant to be the active ingredient. Psalm 127:3 calls our children a heritage from the Lord a reward. And Joel 2:28 promises that “your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.” That is not a distant dream. That is a declaration over your family.
Your children, your grandchildren, the ones you have been standing in the gap for throughout this entire series, they are the loaf. The beautiful, fragrant, nourishing result of a parent who picked up the gift, found the missing piece, and let the Word do what it was always designed to do. It does the heavy lifting.
Whether you are a parent, a stepparent, or a grandparent, what God has placed in your hands is weighty and it is real. Honor Him by getting intimate with Him. Learn what He has said. Pick up what He has given you and use it. Because the people around you will not know what they have been missing until they smell what is coming out of your kitchen, so to speak.
The gift was always there. The Word was always there and so was He.
Now go make some bread.
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
