We all reach a point where we have to ask ourselves some hard questions about who we really are and where we are actually operating from. I am no stranger to this wrestling match. And if you are honest with yourself, neither are you.
So let me ask you a question. If everything that identifies you was suddenly stripped away, your spouse, your children, your parents, your job, your home, your car, your appearance, your bank account, what would remain? What would be left of your identity? And more importantly, where would your foundation actually be?
Because here is the thing. If your answer is not the Word of God living on the inside of you, then there might be fractures in your foundation that need attention. Not shame. Not condemnation. Just honest awareness and attention.
Most of us have grown up in a religion that looks like obedience. Do this, follow that, check these boxes, and you are good. But that is not what God is asking for. He is asking for something far more powerful. He is asking for willingness. He is asking for a heart that actually wants to know Him, not a person going through the motions of a dry, dead religion that has no life, no power, no interactive relationship with Him whatsoever.
And here is what changed everything for me. God does not force that willingness. In Deuteronomy 30:19 He says, “I set before you life or death, blessing or curse. Therefore choose life.” He gives us the choice. He will not choose it for us. Willingness requires choice. And choice requires that we actually want it.
So if you have been trying to be obedient from a place of fear or obligation, you are fracturing yourself. You are operating from a performance instead of from an alive, interactive, daily relationship with Him. And that fracture is keeping and will keep you from moving forward.
But listen to this. When we are willing, when we actually choose Him, Isaiah 1:19 says, “If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.” Not scrape by…not survive…eat the good of the land. That is abundance. That is blessing. That is the life He wants for you. And it flows from willingness.
But here is where it gets real. Getting willing is simple, but it is not always easy. Because willingness requires vulnerability. It requires you to stop pretending and start being honest, with yourself and with Him. He already knows where you are fractured. He already knows what you are afraid of. What He is asking for is for you to place yourself in a vulnerable, submitted position so that He can work, because submission requires trust, and trust requires being willing to be seen (the good, bad and the ugly.)
So before you move forward, before you try to lead anyone else or answer any greater calling, ask yourself. Are there any fractures remaining in my foundation? Are there places where I am still operating from fear instead of willingness? Places where I have made something other than Him my identity? Because you cannot lead others until you first lead yourself. And you cannot lead yourself toward wholeness if you are still fractured inside (they’re linked.)
Here is our challenge. Go back to what we did yesterday. Write JESUS in big black marker. Under it, in little letters, write everything. Then write out the things that are fractured: the worries, the fears, the false identities you have been clinging to or anything else He puts His finger on. Everything that is not in Him. And then as you pray, draw one big red line through each one. His blood covers everything. That is your willingness in action. That is you choosing. That is you submitting.
This is a song I keep come back to in my own moments of surrendering and searching. It is not a quiet song. It provokes something. I hope it brings to the surface anything that might still be holding you back today. Freedom is right there, and His name is: JESUS. https://youtu.be/RbWQV3OiRqA?si=gEWxJqLWruYf-Gr4
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
