~ Dying to Self~

03.February.2026

Where freedom can be found.

“The strongest principle of life and blessing lies in our choice. Our life is the sum result of all the choices we make…” Billy Graham

There is a resistance many feel when God’s invitation to surrender comes. Not because we do not love God, but because our flesh is protective of control. Dying to self sounds like loss until we begin to understand what it actually makes room for.

Scripture is clear and does not compromise. “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” Galatians 2:20, NKJV Surrender does not improve the old life, it replaces it. The life we now live is no longer sourced in self, but in Christ, who lives in us.

Paul continues when he writes, “Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.” Romans 6:6–7, NKJV Death to self is not about punishment, but about release. What once ruled us no longer has authority.

“For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:3, NKJV Hidden does not mean diminished nor vanished. It means secure. Anchored. Safe from the instability of self-driven living.

Smith Wigglesworth said it in simple English, “You must deny yourself to make progress with God.” Progress in the Kingdom is not measured by accumulation, nor accolades, but by surrender.

Oswald Chambers captured the heart attitude required when he wrote, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.” Trust is the attitude that allows surrender to become freedom instead of a spirit of fear.

Jonathan Shuttlesworth brings it into daily life when he says, “If you want to live a fulfilled and abundant life, you must die to self.” Fulfillment does not come from protecting your ego, it flows from yielding your will.

Dying to yourself does not happen  am at once. It is a daily decision. A moment by moment choice to lay down reactions, pride, offense, and the need to be right. It is choosing the Spirit over the flesh, truth over feelings, obedience over impulse.

And here is the contradiction. What we release in surrender is never lost. It is exchanged. Control for peace. Striving for rest. Fear for trust. What feels like the end is often the doorway to your best, God’s Plan A life.

If you feel resistance today, do not condemn yourself. Resistance is often the place where transformation is closest. Bring it honestly before God and let Him show you what is ready to be laid down.

Dying to yourself is not loss. It is freedom.

And if you want a song play in the background, you might let “I Surrender All” play softly. Let it be more than a lyric, let it become your prayer.
