Before we begin, let us consider this quote again and make this a confession of our hearts:
“If God can’t take me there, may I never go.
If God can’t give it to me, may I never have it.
If God can’t do it, let it remain undone.”
Everything begins as a thought.
Every wrong relationship.
Every wrong purchase.
Every misaligned step.
And yes, even many divorces, began quietly in the unseen places of the heart and mind long before they were ever visible to the world.
God sees what happens in the private places. What we allow, what we entertain, what we ignore, and what we tolerate shapes our lives.
“For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.” Mark 4:22 NKJV
Private is not as private as we think. Our inner world eventually becomes our outer world.
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, But his heart is not with you.” Proverbs 23:7 NKJV
And this does not stop with thoughts alone. It affects our homes, our cars, our schedules, our habits, and our environment. God often begins His work of freedom in the most ordinary places.
Over the years, the Lord has gently cautioned me that clutter creates noise, and noise makes it harder to hear His leading. These past weeks that truth landed deeply again.
An influencer on YouTube shared a simple question that reframed everything for me. Not “Do I need it?” because we can justify almost anything. But, “Can I live without it?”
That single question changes the entire conversation. What do I really use and what is simply taking up space
I know today is a weekday, but many of us will have tomorrow, New Year’s Day off. I want to challenge us, over the next few days, to clear the clutter before we step into the new year.
Ask yourself that one simple question, Can I live without it?
Do not make it overwhelming. Make a short list. Set a timer for fifteen minutes. When it goes off, stop. Make a cup of tea or coffee. Read a few pages of a book. Then do it again.
“Let all things be done decently and in order.” I Corinthians 14:40 NKJV
Everything should have a home. And as simple as this sounds, this kind of order frees space emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. It creates room for clarity. It creates room for peace. It creates room for purpose.
“Commit your works to the Lord, And your thoughts will be established.” Proverbs 16:3 NKJV
Ask me how I know… 😂😉
I have been doing this quite a bit over the last few days, and I can tell you, it feels good. And believe it or not, it is spiritual.
As I’ve been walking through this, I realize now that I was quietly shown this way of living by my Mom. She modeled it so beautifully, and even as she grew older. She would call or email my sibling and me and ask if we wanted something she was preparing to give away before she let it go. Even then, she was still clearing the clutter, making room, keeping her life light and ordered.
When I was younger, I was so wrapped up in my own days and responsibilities that I didn’t really see what she was doing through these lenses. I saw it through rules and must dos, through structure and routine. But now I see it differently. Now I recognize the quiet discipline she carried, the kindness she showed herself, the care she poured into her family, and her love for God.
She was living with a spirit of excellence long before I ever knew what to call it.
“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” Colossians 3:23 NLT
Sometimes the most powerful act of giving is not adding more, but letting go.
As we release what we no longer use, we make room for what God has always intended to place in our hands.
