There is something sacred that has rested on the people of God from the very beginning, something Jesus Himself willingly stepped into. And even though it is not the barrier into eternity with Him, it is far too important for us to brush aside. It carries meaning. It carries beauty. It carries obedience. It carries witness.
And yes, Jesus did it.
That alone gives it weight.
When Jesus came to John at the river, John resisted. But Jesus said, “Permit it to be so now for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15). Jesus was not being saved. He was not making up for sin. He was modeling something and was revealing the Father’s heart.
Baptism does not save us. Baptism cannot earn us a place in heaven. Scripture is gentle but clear about that. “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).
Salvation is about faith in Jesus Christ. Finished work. Grace alone.
But baptism is still important because it is an outward testimony of the inward miracle. It is a moment of public surrender, a declaration that we belong to Jesus and that His life has become ours. Peter wrote, “Baptism is not the removal of dirt from your body but a response to God from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:21).
That is why it matters.
Not because of legalism.
Because of love.
There was a denomination in the mid 1980s who believed so strongly in the necessity of immediate baptism that they actually picketed the Billy Graham Crusade in 1986. They were convinced that the response to salvation was incomplete unless baptism happened on the spot. While I do not share that view, I completely understand their passion. When something is precious you want people to experience it fully.
That brings me to a pastor’s words that stuck-can’t recall the exact quote, but here’s the gist: God’s call to obedience isn’t to weigh us down, He’s freeing us up. Obedience means joy on the other side. Baptism is not a harsh demand, but His authoritative command-like a clear call we can choose. An invitation into deeper life.
I also want to speak to the hearts of those who carry questions about a loved one who passed without being baptized. Scripture never teaches that the absence of baptism excludes someone from heaven. Jesus told the thief on the cross, “Today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). No ceremony. No water. Just faith.
God is not looking for a loophole.
He is looking at our hearts.
Still, we should not treat baptism casually. It mattered to Jesus. It mattered to the early church. It matters to the Father. And if it mattered to Him, then it matters to us. Not because we fear but because we love Him. Not because we are earning something but because we are honoring Someone.
If He stepped into the water then it is worth it for us to step into it also.
As we come to the end of this part of the journey, let your heart rest in this simple truth. Baptism is not about earning something from God. It is about responding to the love that has already been poured out on us. It is about honoring the One who stepped into our world, carried our sin, and then stepped willingly into the water to show us the way of obedience. It is a humble act with eternal weight, a moment that declares with joy that we belong to Him.
If He is stirring your heart toward this step, trust that He has already prepared the way. If you have already been baptized, let this be a moment to remember the beauty of that day and to let fresh gratitude rise again.
Before we move into the prayer below, I want to share a song that fits the heart of this moment so well. It can carry you through seasons of joy, battle, surrender, and victory.
Victory in Jesus by Travis Cottrell is one of those reminders that our story is held by a Savior who still rescues, still forgives, still leads, and still makes all things new.
Let it wash over you as you prepare your heart. Let it remind you who you belong to and what He has already conquered for you.
In a moment, you will find the prayer. Take your time with it. Let it be your offering. Let it be your yes.
If you’ve never surrendered to Jesus or have strayed, it’s not too late. He’s waiting to restore and renew you. Return to Him today and say this out loud:
~ Dear Heavenly Father ~
Thank You for sending Jesus to die on the Cross just for me. I admit that I have sinned, and I repent. I ask You to forgive me. I believe that He died and rose again. Right now, I make Him the Lord of my life. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. My sins are washed away, my past is forgiven, and my future is bright. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus’ Name Amen.
