When your time on earth is finished, your life will be summed up by a simple dash on a stone, the line between the day you were born and the day you left this world. That little mark carries the weight of your entire story.
What will your dash say?
Will it speak of someone who loved deeply, gave generously, forgave freely, and walked humbly with God? Or will it represent missed opportunities, bitterness, and regret? What will the Father say — “Well done, good and faithful servant”(Matthew 25:21), or will His words be, “I never knew you; depart from Me” (Matthew 7:23)?

The truth is, every word you speak, every thought you entertain, every choice you make, and every act of obedience or disobedience is shaping that dash right now.
Scripture reminds us that one day we will all stand before the Lord to give an account (Romans 14:12). On that day, it will not matter how much we owned, how many titles we held, or how much applause we received. What will matter is this: Did we live faithfully? Did our lives point to Jesus? Did we do what He asked us to do? It is not only about what we did, but also what we left undone when He called us to act.
In the past couple of weeks, events have reminded us just how fragile life really is. They press on our hearts the truth that none of us knows how much time remains. Because of that, we cannot afford to live passively or distracted. We need to live more intentionally, with purpose, with eternity in view, and with the kingdom of God as our aim.
So let me ask you: Are we doing all we can for the kingdom? Are we living out loud for Jesus as much as we can, intentionally, consistently, and boldly? Or are we living our own plans, hoping God will endorse them, instead of fully walking in His Plan A for our lives? He has a perfect plan for each of us, if we will press in to hear His voice and follow.
Listening to His voice matters not only in the big things, but also in the small ones. It can be as simple as turn left or turn right, wear the black tie or the green tie, buy this car or that, marry this person or not. Every choice matters, because obedience to Him brings blessing.
And remember, our inheritance is not things, it is people. It is the family members who watch the way we live out loud in front of them, even if we never say a word. It is the lives we touch and the souls we point to Jesus. That is the true legacy of a faithful dash.
So here is the challenge: Live your dash with intention. Let your words bring life. Let your thoughts reflect truth. Let your actions display love. And let your obedience to God mark every step. Because in the end, it is not about how long your dash is, but how faithfully you lived it.
If someone were to write your obituary today, what would it say about your dash? What changes might God be asking you to make so your dash reflects Him more clearly?
Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Son and the dash You have entrusted to me. Help me to live it well, for Your glory and not my own. Let my words, my thoughts, my actions, and my obedience leave a legacy of faith that points others to You. When my dash is done, may it tell the story of a life lived faithfully in Your hands. Amen
As we think about our dash and the legacy we leave, it is not just about how we live here, but about the moment we will finally see Jesus face to face. That is our ultimate hope and the true reward of a faithful life.
Sandi Patty captured this so powerfully in her song “We Shall Behold Him.” It is a song of anticipation, reminding us that when our dash is complete, we will stand before the One who gave us life, love, and grace.
May these words stir your heart as you remember: this life is temporary, but eternity with Him is forever. One day, we shall behold Him.
