Yesterday my adult son and I went high-speed electric kart racing. It’s something we’ve done a number of times over the past few years, though hardly at all in the last year. The track was busy with mini-racers, adults, and plenty of energy since it was a Sunday.
We both raced only once. Naturally, my son left me in the dust. But when we picked up our stats afterward, I noticed something: we had both leveled up.
That struck me. Even though my speed couldn’t match his, even though we each raced differently, both of us had advanced.
There were eight of us total in the race. My son noticed, and I agreed, that two of the drivers were very inexperienced, while two others were clearly experts, probably part of racing leagues. When one of those skilled drivers passed me, I tucked in as close behind him as I could. Normally, my mind is busy on the track, trying to figure out how to block someone from passing, how best to take a curve, when to accelerate or slow down. But this time was different. As I followed him, I realized in hindsight that I wasn’t in my head anymore. I was simply watching and mimicking everything he did.
And it worked.
It reminded me of a story I once shared about a minister who was told to “stay on the bumper of the pace car.” Later, he learned that by doing so, he recorded the fastest speed of any civilian who had ever driven that course. He hadn’t focused on his own skill but on staying close to the lead car.
Isn’t that the picture of our walk with Christ? He knows every turn. He knows when to accelerate and when to slow down. He knows how to navigate the dangerous curves and how to keep us in the race. If we stay close to Him, if we get out of our own heads, stop overthinking, and simply follow His lead, we will always be in the right place.
The Bible says, “We have the mind of Jesus.” ~1 Corinthians 2:16~ His thoughts are available to us. His heart for people is revealed through His Word and His Spirit. Our part is to trust Him so fully that we obey without hesitation, even when it feels risky or counterintuitive.
Don’t let the enemy play games with your mind, that’s his only playground if you let him in. Instead, fix your focus on Jesus. Stay on His bumper. Get out of your head and let the Holy Spirit guide you. That’s how you level up in the race of faith.
“Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” ~Hebrews 12:1~

If you’ve never given your life to Jesus, or if you’ve walked away, trying to do life your own way it’s not too late. He’s calling you back. He’s been waiting.
Return to Him today. Surrender your plans, your pain, and your past. He’s ready to restore, renew, and realign you with your divine purpose.
~ Dear Heavenly Father ~
Thank You for sending Jesus to die on the Cross just for me. I admit that I have sinned, and I repent. I ask You to forgive me. I believe that He died and rose again. Right now, I make Him the Lord of my life. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. My sins are washed away, my past is forgiven, and my future is bright. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus’ Name Amen.
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
