Obedience matters.
Disobedience, no matter how small it appears, carries weight, sometimes instantly, sometimes over time, but always with consequences.
There’s a moment frozen in time, a fleeting glance that sealed her fate. Lot’s wife looked back as they fled the destruction of Sodom, and in that instant, her choice spoke louder than any words and still echoes through time as a sober example in Scripture. “Remember Lot’s wife” (Luke 17:32) is all that remains of her name, a stark reminder that turning back in disobedience can have irreversible consequences. The story tells us she became a literal pillar of salt, a haunting image of what it means to let longing for the past outweigh trust in God’s command. Obedience brings blessings.
I imagine the smoke and fire swirling behind her, the familiar city crumbling, the life she had built slipping into ashes. She was commanded not to turn back and yet, she turned. Perhaps it was fear, nostalgia, disbelief, or a heart still tethered to what God was rescuing her from. Whatever the reason, that single glance revealed where her loyalty remained, and her story ended where it might have continued.
Looking back can be subtle. It can hide in memories, regrets, or what-ifs. It can come through a song, a fragrance, a scene, or even a dream that never came to pass. But following Jesus means moving forward, eyes fixed on Him, leaving behind what He has called us out of. The past may call, the familiar may whisper, but His way is forward, not back.
Every step toward Him requires dying to ourselves, laying down our attachments, and trusting that the road ahead, even when uncertain, is the road He has prepared (Galatians 2:20). Lot’s wife reminds us that divided loyalty, a form of idolatry, even for a moment, can cost us more than we imagine-including our lives. “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life.” (Matthew 19:29)
Today, as we reflect, let’s listen to “Holy Forever” by Chris Tomlin, a song that turns our eyes heavenward, reminding us that when our hearts are anchored in God’s eternal holiness, the pull of the past begins to lose its power. His glory becomes our guide, and the story moves forward.
And sometimes, it isn’t turning back that reveals the heart, but reaching out where God has drawn a clear line. One glance cost Lot’s wife everything. One touch would cost Uzzah his life.
