Yesterday morning, I woke up early to the tail end of a full moon, as I often do, but that’s a story for another day. My one-year-old poodle mix, still very much a puppy, stirred when she saw I was awake. Because she’s young, I keep her leash attached to the nightstand while she sleeps in her bed beside me. The moment she noticed I was awake, she lifted her little paws onto the edge of the bed, waiting for permission to climb up. As soon as I unhooked her leash, she hopped up beside me, nestled in close, and rested her head right over my heart. She let out a long sigh, almost a release, and I couldn’t help but smile.
The people I got my dog from gave her a toy with the sound of an actual heartbeat to help her adjust after being weaned from her mother. Even now, my dog finds comfort in the steady sound of my heartbeat. And in that quiet moment cuddling with her, I sensed the Father whisper, “That’s how I want you to rest, close enough to Me to hear My heartbeat.”
It struck me that I can easily be eager to read His Word, to hear His voice, to know what He’s saying, but He longs for me to be just as eager to be with Him and know His heartbeat. We’ve talked about this before: the difference between knowing His logos Word (what is written) and His rhema Word (what is alive and divinely revealed). Like a baby in the womb who becomes attuned to the rhythm of its mother’s heartbeat long before it sees her face, we too are meant to become familiar with the rhythm of our Father’s love, His heart, His breath, His presence.
Obedience and honor are vital, but they were never meant to stand apart from relationship. The heartbeat of our Father is not operational in performance; but in intimacy. True obedience flows from love, not duty. It’s the overflow of a heart that knows Him so well that hesitation fades and confidence grows. When we know His love for us, really know it, obedience stops feeling like striving and starts feeling like protection.
Let me ask you this: if your mother called you on the phone, would you question who it was? Of course not. You’d recognize her voice instantly. That’s how we’re meant to recognize the voice of our Father. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me… and the voice of a stranger they will not follow.” (John 10:27, 5). The more we take quiet time to rest against His heart, the easier it becomes to know His voice, to sense His leading, and to walk without fear.
That closeness, that knowing, is the foundation for every act of faith, every step of obedience, every victory over fear. And it’s from that place of intimacy that we’ll step into the next series together, looking at the lives of men and women in the Bible who chose to either follow God or turn away, and how their choices defined everything that followed.
Before we move forward, let’s pause here, right where the Father invites us to rest against His heart. There’s an older song that captures this longing perfectly, a reminder that nothing compares to the joy of truly knowing Him…daily: 😊“Knowing You” by Graham Kendrick.

~ Dear Heavenly Father ~
Thank You for sending Jesus to die on the Cross just for me. I admit that I have sinned, and I repent. I ask You to forgive me. I believe that He died and rose again. Right now, I make Him the Lord of my life. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. My sins are washed away, my past is forgiven, and my future is bright. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus’ Name Amen.
Make today count and see you tomorrow.
