~The Nature of Faith~

04.October.2025

The writer of Hebrews gives us one of the clearest definitions of faith in Scripture: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Faith doesn’t lean on what we can touch or prove; it leans on the unshakable character of God.

Fear and faith both ask us to believe in something we cannot yet see. Fear imagines the worst and holds us captive to “what if.” Faith, on the other hand, trusts the promise of God even when circumstances haven’t caught up to it yet. Fear cripples, but faith empowers.

I’ve learned that faith isn’t about closing our eyes and hoping everything works out. It’s not blind optimism. Faith is the steady confidence that God is who He says He is and will do what He has said He will do. That means I can rest even when I don’t see the outcome, because I know the One who holds the outcome.

When the disciples were caught in a storm on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus asked them, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40). He wasn’t scolding them for feeling fear in the storm, but for letting the storm speak louder than His presence. Let’s take it a step further and consider Peter. Out of all the disciples, he was the only one who stepped out onto the water when Jesus called to him. For a moment, he walked on what should have swallowed him. But when he shifted his focus from Jesus to the wind and waves, fear rushed in and his faith faltered. Even then, Jesus reached out and caught him.

That’s the nature of faith, it keeps its eyes on Jesus rather than on the waves.

Faith lifts our perspective. It reminds us that God is greater than what we face, and His Word is more certain than what we feel. When fear tempts us to shrink back, faith calls us forward into trust.

As we meditate on this truth today, let’s dedicate our hearts in a simple but powerful declaration. Faith is not complicated, it’s choosing to trust the Lord and follow Him fully. Amy Grant’s song captures that choice so well. I was blessed years ago to see her and Michael W. Smith together live at Red Rocks Amphitheater and like our Heavenly Father, neither the venue nor either of the performers disappoint. Enjoy!

If you’ve never given your life to Jesus, or if you’ve walked away, trying to do life your own way it’s not too late. He’s calling you back. He’s been waiting.

Return to Him today. Surrender your plans, your pain, and your past. He’s ready to restore, renew, and realign you with your divine purpose.

~ Dear Heavenly Father ~

Thank You for sending Jesus to die on the Cross just for me. I admit that I have sinned, and I repent. I ask You to forgive me. I believe that He died and rose again. Right now, I make Him the Lord of my life. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. My sins are washed away, my past is forgiven, and my future is bright. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus’ Name Amen.

Make today count and see you tomorrow.
