“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” ~Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV~
Years ago, I heard a story from a pastor that left a lasting impression on me. He was recounting a personal experience that, at the time, was simply a thrilling gift from his congregation—but it ended up painting a powerful picture of what it truly means to trust in God’s sovereignty and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
This pastor had always loved fast cars, race cars in particular. His congregation, aware of this passion, surprised him one year with a special gift: a professional driving experience. It wasn’t just a day at a public track, it was the real deal. He was invited to drive an actual race car on a professional course, side by side with elite race car drivers.
When he arrived, they assigned him a lead car…a pace car driven by a professional who knew the track like the back of his hand. This man wasn’t just any driver; he was one of the best in the field. Before the race began, the professional looked at the pastor and said something unforgettable:
“You don’t need to know this track. I know it. I know where it curves, when to go high, when to drop low, when to accelerate and when to brake. You don’t need to figure it out, just get on my bumper and follow me closely. If I speed up, you speed up. If I slow down, you slow down. Don’t lag behind. Stay tight.”
Then he added something deeper:
“There are going to be moments when it feels like we’re going too fast to make the turn. But if I can take it at that speed, so can you. Trust what I know.”
So the pastor did exactly that. He stayed on the professional’s bumper, mimicking every move. When the lead car went high on the track, he followed. When it drove low, he drove low. Every acceleration, every deceleration, he matched it. And though there were moments he doubted they could make the curve, he remembered the driver’s words: “If I can make it, you can too.”
When they finished the course, the professional turned to him in amazement.
“No civilian has ever clocked the time you just did. You just hit professional-level speed.”
It wasn’t the pastor’s own racing skill that earned him that result, it was his ability to follow closely and obediently.
This story is more than just a fun memory, it’s an illustration of spiritual truth. God, in His sovereignty, is like that lead driver. He knows the course. He knows every twist and turn of your life, when to pull back, when to press forward, when to navigate high or low, when to slow to a crawl, or when to drive straight through difficulty. And the Holy Spirit, our ever-present Helper, is always out in front, leading.
But here’s the sobering part: He doesn’t force us to follow.
That pastor could have slowed down. He could have drifted off the line, hesitated at the turns, or pulled off the track entirely. He could have said, “This is too fast for me,” or, “I know better—I’ll take this turn a little different.” And if he had, the outcome would’ve looked very different. His success wasn’t guaranteed by the leader’s skill—but by his own willingness to follow closely and trust.
In the same way, God leads perfectly. But how we finish is up to us. The Holy Spirit doesn’t determine how well we follow, that’s our choice.
We often say we trust God, but when life accelerates and the curves come faster than we’d like, do we stay on His bumper, or do we fall back and rely on our own understanding?
Sometimes, we’re tempted to think, “This turn feels too sharp. I don’t think I can make it.” But the Holy Spirit, like that professional driver, is saying:
“If I can take it, you can take it. If I go high, don’t stay low. If I speed up, don’t hesitate. Trust what I know.”
If we want to finish strong, we must follow well. We must lay down the need to know every detail of the road ahead and instead choose to stay close—moving when He moves, pausing when He pauses, and letting His knowledge, not our own, guide our race.
Following well doesn’t just make us appear skilled, it draws us into the reality of Christ’s own ability. When we trust Him fully, we step into His pace, His vision, and His victory.
He knows the track, friend. Trust Him with the turns. It’s your choice. Follow Him well.
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.” ~Romans 8:14 NLT~
Are you following closely, or hesitating at the curves? Have you slowed down when the Spirit is asking you to stay tight and move forward?
Holy Spirit, You know the road I can’t see. Teach me to trust You more than I trust myself. Help me to stay close…to Your voice, to Your pace, to Your path. I want to follow You well.

“Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders…”
A bold anthem for those willing to follow, even when the waters rise and the path ahead disappears from view.
If you’ve never given your life to Jesus, or if you’ve walked away, trying to do life your own way it’s not too late. He’s calling you back. He’s been waiting.
Return to Him today. Surrender your plans, your pain, and your past. He’s ready to restore, renew, and realign you with your divine purpose.
